Changes to NIH funding policies proposed by the Trump administration would deprive medical centers of hundreds of millions of dollars in funding used for clinical trials, research, and safety. The proposed funding changes would cap research overhead expenses at 15% of total costs. This represents a 4-fold cut from the current funding level, which at the University of Michigan is 56% of total costs going to overhead expenses. The University of Michigan Medical Center, and similar medical centers across the country, may lose over $100 million per year with this change. See here for a statement from the University. These funds are critical to provide jobs, safety programs, research lab facilities, clinical trial staff, and specialized equipment that are necessary to provide health care to patients on clinical trials and to conduct medical research.
