Joining the Episcopal Church—2 Classes
RSVP Here for either or both classes
Newcomer Class
April 19, after the 10:30 service (about 11:45 a.m.)
lunch and childcare provided
Lunch and conversation with clergy and a few Vestry members about the current trends, history, and big questions that are alive at St. Clare’s and in the Episcopal Church, along with the chance to share some of your own story of what brought you here and get to know other newer folks as well!
Confirmation & Reception Class
May 3, after the 10:30 service (about 11:45);
lunch and childcare provided
Confirmation and reception are the ways of “officially” joining the Episcopal Church as an adult. Both confirmation and reception happen at services where the bishop is present. The bishop offers confirmation and reception every year at regional services, but she only visits St. Clare’s about every 3 years or so. If you’d like to be confirmed or received this September, when Bishop Bonnie visits St. Clare’s (or you’re curious about what that means), read on! (Please come to the Newcomer class as well though!)
What is the difference between confirmation and reception?
If you haven’t been confirmed before, you’ll be confirmed! If you were already confirmed in a church that has bishops (like the Roman Catholic church), you’ll probably be received into the Episcopal Church. Both are an adult affirmation of your baptism, and an affirmation that this is the branch of the Christian tradition that you are choosing….aka becoming an official Episcopalian.
Wait, am I not a member of St. Clare’s?
If you’re baptized, attend our church regularly, and give of yourself in some way to the congregation, you’re already a member of St. Clare’s. You can keep being a member of St. Clare’s without being confirmed or received. (But if you have never come to a Newcomer class, you should do that on April 19!)
I’m not sure if I’m ready for this—what should I do?
You can come to the classes and learn more. We will celebrate whatever you decide is right for you. You’re also welcome to schedule a meeting with Rev. Anne or Rev. Toby if you would like to talk more individually.
I’m ready to do this thing! What do I need to do?
Attend the Newcomer Class on April 19 if you haven’t already been to a Newcomer Class. Then attend the Confirmation and Reception class on May 3. In late August, we will have a second class to finish preparation for confirmation or reception. Please RSVP for the classes here.
I’m busy that day! What should I do?
Contact Rev. Anne or Rev. Toby and we’ll set up a time to meet instead (or do another class if there are enough people).
